The Truth About Birth

About Me:

My Yoga Experience

My name is Jessica Morris and I am from Richmond, KY.  I love Yoga and Birth.  I have been doing yoga for almost seven years and I have found it a great way to heal my body and calm my mind.  I suffer from scoliosis and other back problems, and doing yoga helps to ease my back pain and correct my alignment.  I received my 200 hr. Yoga Teacher Certification from Yahweh Yoga in Phoenix, AZ.  It is a Christian yoga studio and is accredited by Yoga Alliance.

My Yoga Philosophy

I believe Yoga can be done by anyone as a wellness practice.  It can help make you more fit and calm and it can also be adapted to aid in healing for your specific needs.  I also believe alignment is very important in yoga and can make a huge difference in how much you get out of the practice.  That is why I recommend that those who are fairly new to yoga have lessons, either one-on-one or group, with a competent instructor rather than just starting with instructive videos.  This way you are able to get individual suggestions and adjustments to correct your technique.  When going to a yoga class, listen for a teacher who gives verbal cues for alignment such as "tuck your tailbone" and "roll your shoulder blades down your spine."  If a teacher goes from pose to pose with out correcting alignment or giving that type of cue, I would look for another teacher until you are familiar enough with yoga to practice with good alignment on your own.

My Birth Experience
I have been working as a midwife's assistant since June 2007.  I have attended office visits with her, as well as homebirths.  I have also been working as a Labor/Birth Doula since Spring of 2008.  I have attended births in both home and hospital settings.

My Birth Philosophy

I believe that pregnancy and childbirth are a natural part of life and not a medical condition.  Healthy women who have healthy babies should be able to have a comfortable and joyful birth experience without unnecessary medical intervention.  As a doula I can provide information on common medical procedures used during hospital births, as well as their risks and benefits.  This enables the parents to decide what is best for their childbirth experience.  It can be empowering information, since a lot of hospitals do these procedures routinely without giving the parents Informed Consent.  Making a Birth Plan and making sure that you have a health care provider that is supportive is essential to having the birth experience you want.
